Retail banks offer services and products to the general population to enable their customers to manage their daily finances. Personal customers tend to use retail banks and building societies for current and savings accounts and access to credit. These organisations operate on every high street, most have an online presence and generally offer telephone banking services.

Wholesale banking

Wholesale banking is commonly defined as banking services that are provided between merchant banks and other financial institutions. However, wholesale banking is often used as a term to refer to the wide range of financial services that are provided by financial institutions to various corporations and businesses.

Insurance

The insurance sector employs more than 300,000 people in the UK , which is a third of all financial services jobs. There are more than 1,000 organisations undertaking insurance related activities authorised by the Financial Services Authority (FSA), managing almost £1.5 trillion in assets.

Accountancy helps form a clear financial image of how a business is functioning and is one of the oldest professions. It is often referred to as ‘the language and soul of business’ as it keeps a company’s financial information in pertinent order. This financial information is vital for management, employees, regulatory bodies, potential investors and other stakeholders to make informed decisions.

There are three main fields of accounting.

Financial advice exists in a variety of formats, often specific to a sub-sector of financial services, such as:

  • investment
  • insurance
  • borrowing
  • saving
  • life assurance
  • retirement planning

The need for financial advice grows as government increasingly wants individuals to rely less on the state and to achieve their financial security.

Financial advice is carried by advisors with varying titles including:

Third party administration

In the last decade it has become increasingly prevalent for businesses to transfer one or more of their functions to an external specialist service provider. Formal contracts define the details and the two parties work together in an ongoing business relationship. This kind of arrangement is often known as ‘outsourcing’.

Life assurance and pension adminstration

Life assurance companies provide their customers with financial protection and wealth management solutions.

Life assurance is all about:

■catering for the long-term aspects of an individual’s life
■ensuring that they are set up according to their personal needs
■taking account of their personal circumstances and using this information to plan as accurately as possible for the future
